Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 1 to 5.
It used to be that people would drink coffee or tea in the morning to pick them up and get them going for
the day. Then cola drinks hit the market. With lots of caffeine and sugar, these beverages soon became the
pick-me-up of choice for many adults and teenagers. Now drink companies are putting out so-called “energy
drinks”. These beverages have the specific aim of giving tired consumers more energy.
One example of a popular energy drink is Red Bull. The company that puts out this beverage has stated in
interviews that Red Bull is not a thirst quencher. Nor is it meant to be a fluid replacement drink for athletes.
Instead, the beverage is meant to revitalize a tired consumer's body and mind. In order to do this, the makers
of Red Bull, and other energy drinks, typically add vitamins and certain chemicals to their beverages. The
added chemicals are like chemicals that the body naturally produces for energy. The vitamins, chemicals,
caffeine, and sugar found in these beverages all seem like a sure bet to give a person energy.
Health professionals are not so sure, though. For one thing, there is not enough evidence to show that all of
the vitamins added to energy drinks actually raise a person's energy level. Another problem is that there are so
many things in the beverages. Nobody knows for sure how all of the ingredients in energy drinks work
together.
Dr. Brent Bauer, one of the directors at the Mayo Clinic in the US, cautions people about believing all the
claims energy drinks make. He says, “It is plausible if you put all these things together, you will get a good
result.” However, Dr. Bauer adds the mix of ingredients could also have a negative impact on the body. “We
just don't know at this point,” he says.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 37 to 43.
Scientists have identified two ways in which species disappear. The first is through ordinary or
“background” extinctions, where species that fail to adapt are slowly replaced by more adaptable life forms.
The second is when large numbers of species go to the wall in relatively short periods of biological time.
There have been five such extinctions, each provoked by cataclysmic evolutionary events caused by some
geological eruption, climate shift, or space junk slamming into the Earth. Scientists now believe that another
mass extinction of species is currently underway – and this time human fingerprints are on the trigger.
How are we doing it? Simply by demanding more and more space for ourselves. In our assault on the
ecosystems around us we have used a number of tools, from spear and gun to bulldozer and chainsaw. Certain
especially rich ecosystems have proved the most vulnerable. In Hawaii, more than half of the native birds are
now gone – some 50 species. Such carnage has taken place all across the island communities of the Pacific
and Indian oceans. While many species were hunted to extinction, others simply succumbed to the “
introduced predators’ that humans brought with them: the cat, the dog, the pig, and the rat.
Today the tempo of extinction is picking up speed. Hunting is no longer the major culprit, although rare
birds and animals continue to be butchered for their skin, feathers, tusks, and internal organs, or taken as
savage pets. Today the main threat comes from the destruction of the habitat of wild plants, animals, and Trang 4/5 - Mã đề 803
insects that need to survive. The draining and damming of wetland and river courses threatens the aquatic
food chain and our own seafood industry. Overfishing and the destruction of fragile coral reefs destroy ocean
biodiversity. Deforestation is taking a staggering toll, particularly in the tropics where the most global
biodiversity is at risk. The shrinking rainforest cover of the Congo and Amazon river basins and such places
as Borneo and Madagascar have a wealth of species per hectare existing nowhere else. As those precious
hectares are drowned or turned into arid pasture and cropland, such species disappear forever.

word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 7 to 13.
Most parents want their sons and daughters to have equal chances of success when they grow up. Today,
equality of the sexes is largely mandated by public policy and law. However, old-fashioned ideas and a lot of
prejudice are still part of our culture and present challenging questions for parents.
Gender stereotypes are rigid ideas about how boys and girls should behave. We all know what these
stereotypes are: A "feminine" girls should be insecure, accommodating and a little illogical in her thinking. A
"masculine" boy should be strong, unemotional, aggressive, and competitive. How are children exposed to
these stereotypes? According to the researchers David and Myra Sadker of the American University of
Washington, Trang 2/5 - Mã đề 804
D.C., boys and girls are often treated differently in the classroom. They found out that when boys speak,
teachers usually offer constructive comments, when girls speech, teachers tend to focus on the behavior. It's
more important how the girls act rather than what they say.
The emphasis on differences begins at birth and continues throughout childhood. For example, few people
would give pink baby's clothes to a boy or a blue blanket to a girl. Later, many of us give girls dolls and
miniature kitchenware, while boys receive action figures and construction sets. There's nothing wrong with
that. The problem arises when certain activities are deemed appropriate for one sex but not the other.
According to Heather J. Nicholson, Ph.D., director of the National Resource Center for Girls, Inc., this kind of
practice prevents boys and girls from acquiring important skills for their future lives.
"The fact is," says Nicholson, "that society functions as a kind of sorting machine regarding gender. In a
recent survey, fifty-eight percent of eighth-grade girls but only six percent of boys earned money caring for
younger children. On the other hand, twenty-seven percent of boys but only three percent of girls earned
money doing lawn work". If we are serious about educating a generation to be good workers and parents, we
need to eliminate such stereotypes as those mentioned previously.
Gender stereotypes inevitably are passed to our children. However, by becoming aware of the messages
our children receive, we can help them develop ways to overcome these incorrect ideas. To counteract these
ideas, parents can look for ways to challenge and support their children, and to encourage confidence in ways
that go beyond what society's fixed ideas about differences of sext are.

Question 7. Which of the following could be the main idea of the passage?
A. The influence of education and society on gender stereotypes.
B. Different prejudice about how girls and boys should behave and be treated.
C. Deep-seated stereotypes about genders and their effects.
D. The role of culture in the behavior of different genders.
Question 8. According to the second paragraph, David and Myra Sadker of the American University of

word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 34 to 38.
For many American university students, the weeklong spring break holiday means an endless party on a
sunny beach in Florida or Mexico. In Panama City Beach, Florida, a city with a permanent population of
around 36,000, more than half a million university students arrive during the month of March to play and
party, making it the number one spring break destination in the United States. A weeklong drinking binge is
not for anyone, however, and a growing number of American university students have found a way to make
spring break matter. For them, joining or leading a group of volunteers to travel locally or internationally and
work to show problems such as poverty, homelessness, or environmental damage makes spring break a
unique learning experience that university students can feel good about. Students who participate in
alternative spring break projects find them very rewarding. While most university students have to get their
degrees before they can start helping people, student volunteers are able to help people now. On the other
hand, the accommodations are far from glamorous. Students often sleep on the floor of a school or spend the
week camping in tents. But students only pay around $250 for meals and transportation, which is much less
than some of their peers spend to travel to more traditional spring break hotspots.
Alternative spring break trips appear to be growing in popularity at universities across the United States.
Students cite a number of reasons for participating. Some appreciate the opportunity to socialize and meet
new friends. Others want to exercise their beliefs about people’s obligation to serve humanity and make the
world a better place. Whatever their reason, these students have discovered something that gives them rich
rewards along with a break from schoolwork.

Many students believe that math is an inherited ability – either they have the math gene or they don’t.
However, a recent research shows that inborn talent might not be as important as we think. In the long run, the
most successful students are often those who work the hardest, not those with the highest IQs. These students
believe that perseverance, not an innate gift, is the key to achievement.
In her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Carol Dweck argues that a positive mindset is what
makes some students push themselves when others give up. Students with a “fixed mindset” believe that they
were born with a certain set of talents. They see challenges as a sign that they’ve reached the limit of their
natural ability, and they stop trying. On the contrary, students with a “growth mindset” believe that there are
no limits on their potential, and view challenges as a chance to learn and improve. They know that their Trang 4/5 - Mã đề 901
intelligence can be built through experience and effort, and are not held back by the idea of inborn
restrictions.
Geoff Colvin delivers a similar message in his book, Talent Is Overrated. He demonstrates that success is
almost always the result of what he calls “deliberate practice”, concentrated effort to improve one’s skills
through focused effort. Inborn talent might make a difference when a subject is first tackled, but years later,
it’s the hard-working children who are the most successful. Kim Callan – a math teacher – agrees: “It is rare
for a hard-working student to fail in my class.”
Having the right mindset is critical to success. Children need to believe in their ability to overcome
challenges through concentrated effort. If you place your child in the right math class and encourage him/ her
to work hard, there’s no limit to what he/she will be able to accomplish.

Recently fans of top soaps, dramas and reality shows in the USA have started to get angry about the
number and frequency of the adverts in the middle of the programmes. Sometimes it seems that the adverts
are more important than the programmes themselves. For example, American dramas aren't as long as they
were in the past. Nowadays in the US, an ‘hour-long’ drama lasts about 40 minutes, whereas in the 1980s the
programmes lasted 48 minutes. The rest is adverts.
The ABC channel had slightly more adverts than other channels. But recently they've changed, which is
even worse than before! Before, all their dramas had four sections. But now its producers separate each
programme into six sections. Usually the first section is approximately ten minutes long. Then they have the
first break. When people have watched a programme for ten minutes, it’s much less probable that they will
stop watching or change channels. But then, in the next 45 minutes, there are four more commercial breaks.
Each break is about three and a half minutes long.
All of this makes it much more difficult for dramas’ writers to write good stories. Quiet scenes make no
impact because there are more and more adverts which are longer and longer. 'It's OK for game shows or
more exciting adventure series.' says American TV producer David Kelley. ‘But for programmes that don’t Trang 5/5 - Mã đề 901
depend on violence or melodramatic scenes, it's more difficult to make a story with six sections. The only
thing you can do is be more aggressive, either with the music or the visual impact, just to attract people's
attention after the adverts.’

is more likelу to win. Why? Because red seems to be the colour that signals dominance. It is also proved that
contact with this colour causes the heart rate to increase. However, оnе of red’s lighter shades, pink, can have
the opposite effect on реорlе. Men in prisons are less aggressive whеn the walls are a specific shade of pink.
Blue, the соlоur of the sky аnd sea, has some meaning. Its dаrkеr shades rерrеsеnt calm, stability and
power. Dark blue, for example, is the соlоur of the business suit оr police uniform; it tells others, 'I аm in
соntrоl.’ Bluе is also associated with depression. It’s common in English, for example, when you are feeling
sad or bitter, to talk about ‘feeling blue;’ while in lrаn, blue is the colour of mоurning, wоrn whеn а реrsоn
dies. Like pink, bluе has а calming effect оn people. Rooms painted blue help people to rеlах оr sleep.
Sleeping pills аrе often coloured blue to suggest exactly this idea. This colour also seems to reduce feelings
оf hunger. Blue food is rаrеlу seen in nature, and when it is, such food is usually nо lоngеr healthy to
соnsumе.

The transition of digital photography from the privilege of rich people to an ordinary home appliance has
caused some problems. That is the reason a modern man has a set of questions concerning digital cameras.
The basic problem in choosing a digital camera is the guarantee that the device you are purchasing will
“grow old” in a couple of months due to constant improvements and developments of technology. The only
factor that may delay this process of “growing old” is purchasing a device with the price twice or three times Trang 3/5 - Mã đề 902
higher than the average market price for a digital camera at the moment. If a person chooses a digital camera,
there are several criteria of a great priority he needs to keep in mind: the price and the image resolution of the
camera, the capacity of the memory card, the presence of an LCD display, the interface of the device and its
weight and size.
The price of a digital camera depends on its quality factors. The resolution of a digital camera or the “size
of a digital image”, is measured in pixels which are photosensitive elements. It is common knowledge that the
bigger the amount of pixels in the camera properties is, the better it is. Therefore, if a high-detailed photo is
required, the usage of the zoom on a digital camera with low resolution will not give the desired result. In this
case, a person choosing a digital camera needs to exactly know what it will be used for and to choose it
according to its future destination. It is necessary to mention that the resolution of 640 x 480 is the lowest
resolution any customer should be orientated to. It is the minimal resolution with which the purchase of a
digital camera still remains reasonable.
The lens of the camera or the zoom properties allows saving a lot on the price of the device but hits the
quality of the pictures. The memory card is a very important issue, too. It is much better to choose a good
camera with a small memory capacity than an average digital camera with a larger memory capacity. The
presence of an LCD display is no longer a wish. It is a requirement for any digital camera. It allows people to
check the future image, to anticipate it and to delete bad images and therefore to save space.

Many of the major supermarket chains have come under fire with accusations of various unethical acts
over the past decade. They've wasted tonnes of food, they've underpaid their suppliers and they've contributed
to excessive plastic waste in their packaging, which has had its impact on our environment.
But supermarkets and grocers are starting to sit up and take notice. In response to growing consumer
backlash against the huge amounts of plastic waste generated by plastic packaging, some of the largest UK
supermarkets have signed up to a pact promising to transform packaging and cut plastic wastage. In a pledge
to reuse, recycle or compost all plastic wastage by 2025, supermarkets are now beginning to take some
responsibility for the part they play in contributing to the damage to our environment, with one major
supermarket announcing their plan to eliminate all plastic packaging in their own-brand products by 2023.
In response to criticisms over food waste, some supermarkets are donating some of their food surplus.
However, charities estimate that they are only accessing two per cent of supermarkets' total food surplus, so
this hardly seems to be solving the problem. Some say that supermarkets are simply not doing enough. Most
supermarkets operate under a veil of secrecy when asked for exact figures of food wastage, and without more
transparency it is hard to come up with a systematic approach to avoiding waste and to redistributing surplus
food.
Some smaller companies are now taking matters into their own hands and offering consumers a greener,
more environmentally friendly option. Shops like Berlin's Original Unverpakt and London's Bulk Market are Trang 4/5 - Mã đề 903
plastic-free shops that have opened in recent years, encouraging customers to use their own containers or
compostable bags. Online grocer Farmdrop eliminates the need for large warehouses and the risk of huge food
surplus by delivering fresh produce from local farmers to its customers on a daily basis via electric cars,
offering farmers the lion's share of the retail price.
There is no doubt that we still have a long way to go in reducing food waste and plastic waste. But perhaps
the major supermarkets might take inspiration from these smaller grocers and gradually move towards a more
sustainable future for us all.

Innovation in mobile phones has been happening so fast that it's difficult for consumers to change their
behaviour. Phones are constantly swallowing up other products like cameras, calculators, clocks, radios, and
digital music players. There are twenty different products that previously might have been bought separately
that can now be part of a mobile phone. Mobiles have changed the way people talk to one another, they have
generated a new type of language, they have saved lives and become style icons.
Obviously, the rich have been buying phones faster than the poor. But this happens with every innovation.
Mobile phone take-up among the poor has actually been far quicker than it was in the case of previous
products, such as colour television , computers and Internet access. Indeed, as mobile phones continue to
become cheaper and more powerful, they might prove to be more successful in bridging the gap between the
rich and the poor than expensive computers.
There are obviously drawbacks to mobiles as well : mobile users are two and a half times more likely to
develop cancer in areas of the brain adjacent to their phone ear, although researchers are unable to prove
whether this has anything to do with the phone; mobile thefts now account for a third of all street robberies in
London, and don't forget about all the accidents waiting to happen as people drive with a mobile in one hand.
But, overall, mobile phones have proved to be a big benefit for people. Trang 5/5 - Mã đề 903

Most libraries require you to register before you are allowed to borrow any of their materials. This means
you will probably be asked to fill out and sign a registration card. When you do this, you are not only giving
the library your name and address for their files, you are also signing an agreement. The agreement says,
basically, that you will obey the rules of the library. A parent or guardian is sometimes also required to sign
the card.
To be entitled to use your school library, you probably must only be enrolled in that school. Once you are
registered, you will be issued a library or borrower’s card. On this card will be your name and a number. Each
time you check out, that is, officially borrow something from the library, you will have to present this card to
the librarian.
If your library is large enough, it may have film equipment that you may borrow. To do so, however, the
library usually requires a separate registration. You may also have to take and pass a course the library gives
on how to operate the different pieces of equipment.
You usually check out and return borrowed materials at the same desk. The sign on this desk may read
Circulation Desk, Check Out Here, or perhaps Charge Desk.
The library staff member at this desk will take your card and stamp the book card with a date. This is the
date by which you are expected to return the material to the library, so others can have the chance of
borrowing it. Many libraries allow you to renew the book if it has not been requested by others.
Some libraries charge a fine for each day a library book is overdue, kept out beyond the date stamped on
the book card. There are also often fines for books returned damaged or written in. Should you lose a library
book, you may be required to pay the library the amount it was worth. Not paying fines could result in your
losing all library privileges.

word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 39 to 43.
A letter of application is a sales letter in which you are both salesperson and product, for the purpose of an
application is to attract an employer's attention and persuade him or her to grant you an interview. To do this,
the letter presents what you can offer the employer, rather than what you want from the job.
Like a résumé, the letter of application is a sample of your work and an opportunity to demonstrate your
skills and personality. If it is written with flair and understanding and prepared with professional care, it is
likely to be very effective. While the résumé must be factual, objective, and brief, the letter is your chance to Trang 4/5 - Mã đề 904
interpret and expand. It should state explicitly how your background relates to the specific job, and it should
emphasize your strongest and most relevant characteristics. The letter should demonstrate that you know both
yourself and the company.
The letter of application must communicate your ambition and enthusiasm. Yet it must be modest. It
should be neither aggressive nor compliant: neither pat yourself on the back nor ask for sympathy. It should
never express dissatisfaction with the present or former job or employer. And you should avoid discussing
your reasons for leaving your last job.
Finally, it is best that you not broach the subject on salary. Indeed, even if a job advertisement requires that
you mention your salary requirements, it is advisable simply to call them "negotiable". However, when you
go on an interview, you should be prepared to mention a salary range. For this reason, you should investigate
both your field and, if possible, the particular company. You don't want to ask for less than you deserve or
more than is reasonable.

word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 20 to 26.
The first drawings on walls appeared in caves thousands of years ago. Later the Ancient Romans and
Greeks wrote their names and protest poems on buildings. Modern graffiti seems to have appeared in
Philadelphia in the early 1960s, and by the late sixties it had reached New York. The new art form really took
off in the 1970s, when people began writing their names, or “tags”, on buildings all over the city. In the mid
seventies it was sometimes hard to see out of a subway car window, because the trains were completely
covered in spray paintings known as “masterpieces”.
In the early days, the “taggers” were part of street gangs who were concerned with marking their territory.
They worked in groups called “crews”, and called what they did “writing” – the term “graffiti” was first used
by The New York Times and the novelist Norman Mailer. Art galleries in New York began buying graffiti in
the early seventies. But at the same time that it began to be regarded as an art form, John Lindsay, the then
mayor of New York, declared the first war on graffiti. By the 1980s it became much harder to write on
subway trains without being caught, and instead many of the more established graffiti artists began using
roofs of buildings or canvases.
The debate over whether graffiti is art or vandalism is still going on. Peter Vallone, a New York city
councillor, thinks that graffiti done with permission can be art, but if it is on someone else’s property it
becomes a crime. ‘I have a message for the graffiti vandals out there,’ he said recently. ‘Your freedom of
expression ends where my property begins.’ On the other hand, Felix, a member of the Berlin-based group
Reclaim Your City, says that artists are reclaiming cities for the public from advertisers, and that graffiti
represents freedom and makes cities more vibrant.
For decades graffiti has been a springboard to international fame for a few. Jean-Michel Basquiat began
spraying on the street in the 1970s before becoming a respected artist in the ’80s. The Frenchman Blek le Rat
and the British artist Banksy have achieved international fame by producing complex works with stencils,
often making political or humorous points. Works by Banksy have been sold for over £100,000. Graffiti is
now sometimes big business.

It is not surprising that the birthplace of cola was the hot and humid American South. This region had long
specialized in creating delicious soft drinks. A druggist in Atlanta, Georgia named John Pemberton created
the most well-known drink brand in the world in the 1880s. However, it seems clear that he had no idea how
big it would become.
Like many American pharmacists of the day, Pemberton was opposed to the drinking of alcohol and
wanted to produce a stimulating soft drink. First, he made "the French Wine of Coca," made from the coca
leaf. Then he began to experiment with the cola nut. Eventually, he managed to make a combination of the
two that he thought was sweet, but not too sweet. Deciding that "the two C's would look well in advertising,"
he named it Coca-Cola.
Pemberton's invention caught on fairly quickly. By 1905, "Coke" was being advertised all over the
country as "The Great Natural Temperance Drink." The drink enjoyed additional success since there was a
large and popular temperance movement in the US at that time. In the 1920s, alcohol was outlawed, and sales
of Coke rose significantly. However, they continued to rise even after the law was removed.
Another reason for Coke's popularity was good business sense. A year after he invented Coca-Cola,
Pemberton had sold it to Asa Griggs Candler for only $283.26! Candler was a marketing genius, and by the
time he sold the Coca-Cola Company in 1919, it was worth $25 million.

word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 16 to 20.
Scientists know that there were wolves on Earth about one million years ago. Dogs, on the other hand,
have not been on Earth nearly as long. The oldest dog remains, found in Germany, are about 14,000 years old.
Scientists have proven that dogs are descended from wolves. Though wolves and dogs share some of the same
genes, they are not exactly alike. In fact, there are as many differences as there are similarities between the
two.
First, there are physical differences between the two. Wolves have longer legs, larger feet, and a broader
skull than dogs. They also walk differently from dogs. A wolf runs on its toes with its heels raised up from the
ground. This is more similar to a cat’s walk than a dog’s. Trang 2/3 - Mã đề 014
Second, there are mental differences between the two. Dogs have been domesticated. This means that dogs
have been brought under the control of humans in order to provide companionship. Wolves have not been
domesticated. They are wild animals. Having a dog as a pet is like having a juvenile wolf. A young wolf will
turn into a mature adult, while a young dog does not mature. A dog might seem smart by performing tricks
for people. Wolves need to be smart to survive in the wild. While it may not be impossible to have a wolf as a
pet, scientists are of the opinion that a wolf could never be domesticated in the same way as a dog.
It’s important to keep in mind that the differences between the two are great, and each should be
appreciated in its own habitat or home.

The naïve view of intercultural contact – that any intercultural contact is likely to be beneficial – has been
proven repeatedly to be incorrect. But what, then, are the conditions under which intercultural contacts might
turn out to be favorable? What do we know about the attitudes that form when people have frequent
intercultural contacts with one another?
In his classic study on the contact hypothesis, Yehuda Amir describes four conditions that are likely to
lead to positive attitudes as a result of intercultural communication. Interestingly, each of these conditions
affects the motivational component of intercultural competence. The first condition is that there must be
support from the top. That is, if the high-status individuals – those who are in charge or who are recognized as
authority figures – support the international contact, it is more likely to lead to a positive outcome.
The second condition for positive intercultural interactions is that those involved have a personal stake in
the outcome. This means that the individuals involved have something to gain if they are successful – or
something to lose if they are unsuccessful – that makes them regard the interactions as personal. If someone is
personally invested in the outcome of the interaction, there is increased motivation to do well and make it
thrive.
The third condition affecting the likelihood that intercultural interactions will be regarded as positive is
that the actual intercultural contacts are viewed as pleasing and constructive. Interactions that are enjoyable
make people feel good about their experiences and increase the prospects for further intercultural contacts.
The fourth condition that Amir says will likely lead to favorable attitudes as a consequence of intercultural
interactions is related to the perceived outcome of the interaction. When all parties have the potential to be
effective – that is, when the members of both cultures either have common goals or view the interaction as
allowing them to achieve their own individual goals – then successful cooperation is possible, and the
interactants are very likely to perceive the intercultural contact as having the potential to be beneficial. Trang 3/4 - Mã đề 014

Medellin, Colombia’s second city, used to have one of the highest crime rates in the world, but thanks to a
variety of initiatives, crime has dropped by 80 percent. Surprisingly, one part of the solution is cable cars.
Since 2004, the city has invented over $60 million during a system of cable cars to connect the so-called
“barrios” to the centre of the city. The barrios – poorer residential areas – are located in the hills around
Medellin and the cable cars, which are efficient and affordable, have reduced some journey times from two
hours to seven minutes.
The radical thinking behind the cable car is to integrate the poor into the city, rather than forcing them to
the edge of it and thereby excluding them. Libraries and crèches have been built around the cable car stations,
allowing mothers to leave their children close to home while they go to work in the city. The side effects of
this project have been to reduce pollution and crime, and to turn what was previously a no-go area into a
tourist destination.
The cable cars are, of course, not the only reason for Medellin’s renaissance. New and impressive public
buildings, designed by local architects, have restored a sense of pride in the city and even the poorest slum
housing is now being adequately supplied with water and electricity. Medellin still has challenges to
overcome but already it is being seen as an example to other cities around the world of how to cope with the
problems of urbanisation.

In American, although most men still do less housework than their wives , that gap has been halved since
the 1960s. Today, 41 per cent of couples say they share childcare equally, compared with 25 percent in 1985.
Mẹn’s greater involvement at home is good for their relationships with their spouses, and also good for their
children. Hands-on fathers make better parents than men who let their wives do all the nurturing and
childcare. They raise sons who are more expressive and daughters who are more likely to do well in school –
especially in math and Science.
In 1900, life expectancy in the United States was 47 years, and only four per cent of the population was 65
or older. Today, life expectancy is 76 years, and by 2025, it is estimated about 20 per cent of the us,
population will be 65 or older. For the first time, a generation of adults must pay for the needs of both their
parents and their children. Most Americans are responding with remarkable grace. One in four households
gives the equivalent of a full day a week or more in unpaid care to an aging relative, and more than half say
they expect to do so in the next 10 years. Older people are less likely to be impoverished or incapacitated by
illness than in the past, and have more opportunity to develop a relationship with their grandchildren.
Even some of the choices that worry people the most are turning out to be manageable. Divorce rates are
likely to remain high, and in many cases marital breakdown causes serious problems for both adults and kids.
Yet when parents minimize conflict, family bonds can be maintained. And many families are doing this.
More non-custodial parents are staying in touch With their children. Child-support receipts are rising. A lower
proportion of children from divorced families are exhibitive problems than in earlier decades. And
stepfamilies are learning to maximize children’s access to supportive adults rather than cutting them off from
one side of the family.

A good deal of fascinating research has been done about the reading patterns of young people, and it is
surprising to discover at what an early age children start expressing preferences for particular kinds of books.
A recent report, which examined in detail the reading habits of primary-school children, showed that even
seven-year-old boys and girls have clear views about what they want to read. Girls, in general, read more, and
far more girls than boys preferred reading stories. Boys were showing a taste for the more instant appeal of
picture stories, or else books about their hobbies.
These tastes continue unchanged until the children are teenagers. Apparently girls read more in general,
but more fiction in particular. You could say that there are more opportunities for girls to read fiction:
magazines encourage the fiction habit in girls in their early teens, and by their late teens, girls have
probably moved on to the adult women’s magazines. Teenage boys tend to buy magazines about their
hobbies: sports, motorcycles, heavy transport and so on.
Adult reading tastes are also the subject of research. Again the number of women who read for pleasure is
considerably higher than the number of men. It seems that the majority of women still want love stories.
There has also been some analysis of what men actually read. Apparently only 38 percent of men read
anything, but 50 percent of what they read is fiction in the form of action-packed stories of space or gunmen.

The cooling oceans
The upper layers of Earth's oceans have cooled significantly over the past two years, (28) ______ the
planet as a whole is warming up. While this may just be part of the natural variation of oceans, climatologists
are still confounded by the massive unaccountable loss of heat. Scientists have been increasingly concerned
by rising sea temperatures over the last 50 years but these new (29) ______ tell a different story.
Generally speaking, the absorption of heat by the oceans reduces atmospheric warming. Now

THE SCHOOL VIOLENCE
Children’s behavior has worsened over the past five years, according to a survey of teachers which found
that a fifth thought girls were more likely to cause more trouble than boys. The survey, published after
teachers at a Lancashire school went on strike over discipline, found low-lever disruption, including chatting
and “horsing around”, was the biggest problem. Boys were more likely to be physically aggressive while girls
tended to ostracise other pupils.
Among male pupils the most challenging behavior for teachers was physical aggression, such as pushing,
spitting, kicking and hitting. A secondary teacher quoted in the survey said boys were usually aggressive with
other pupils, while girls tended to call one another names. Teachers criticised a lack of role models in the
home. A primary teacher said: “The boys are far more willing to be aggressive to adults, verbally and even
physically. There don’t seem to be any parental boundaries set of what is an appropriate way to speak and
deal with another adult.
A department head in a primary school told the survey, carried out in March, that “classes with a majority
of boys tend to be louder, less co-operative and harder to teach”. Nearly half of the staff surveyed said boys’
bravado was behind their disruption. For girls, the most likely trigger was a break-up between friends. A
primary school teacher from Bedfordshire said: “Boys are generally more physical and their behavior is more
noticeable. Girls often say nasty things, which end up disrupting the lesson just as much as the boys, as other Trang 4/5 - Mã đề 016
children get upset and can’t focus on their work. They are usually the ones who refuse to comply with
instruction.”
Government figures for 2008-9 showed that boys represented 78% of the total number of permanent
exclusions from schools in England. This proportion was unchanged from the year before. The ATL general
secretary, Mary Bousted, said: “Staff get ground down daily by the chatting and messing around, which
disrupts lessons for the other pupils and take the pleasure out of teaching. Even more worrying is the physical
aggression, most often among boys but also among some girls, which puts other pupils and staff at risk.
Schools need to have firm and consistent discipline policies and work with parents to keep schools and
colleges safe places for pupils and staff alike.”
