The United Kingdom’s White Star Line built the Titanic to be the most luxurious cruise

ship in the world. It was nearly 900 feet long and more than 100 feet high. The Titanic

could reach speeds of 30 knots and was thought to be the world’s fastest ship. With its

individualized watertight compartments, it was seen as virtually unsinkable.

On its first voyage, from Southampton, England, to New York with stops in Cherbourg,

France, and Queenstown, Ireland, the Titanic was carrying 2,206 people, including a crew

of 898. A relatively mild winter had produced a bumper crop of icebergs in the North

Atlantic, but the crew, believing their ship was unsinkable, paid little attention to

warnings. The Titanic hit an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time. After nearly three hours of

leaking (2:20 a.m.), the Titanic finally sank. The Carpathia arrived about an hour later and

rescued 705 people who luckily had rooms on the lifeboats.

One of the worst recorded traffic jams in history took place on a highway west of Beijing

in August 2010. The congestion lasted for over ten days, and involved at least 10,000

vehicles. Some drivers were trapped for days, and relied on cyclists and pedlars for food

and water. The goods were sold at outrageous prices, creating a good chance of earning

money for the nearby residents. The congestion was caused by an extraordinary number

of trucks on the road, including road construction vehicles and trucks hauling coal from

Mongolia. Breakdowns added to the volume, turning the expressway into a massive

parking lot.

Nowadays, in spite of the development of private vehicles, the benefits of public

transport cannot be denied because it helps protect the environment, save money and

reduce traffic problems.

Firstly, public transport preserves the environment better than private vehicles. For

instance, if each person has a car or a motorbike, there will be a plenty of poisonous

toxic release into atmosphere. Thus, public transport can help to reduce the amount of

carbon dioxide emission, which is a great advantage for our environment as well as for

our health.

Secondly, public transport is cheaper than using private vehicles. When some people own

a private car or motorbike, they have to pay for not only gas bills but also service, repair

and parking fees. On the contrary, they can save quite an amount of money when

travelling by bus or train.

Last but not least, it is an effective method to solve some serious traffic problems such as:

traffic jam and accidents. The fewer vehicles move in the street, the smoother traffic will

be. People will no longer be concerned about waiting hours in traffic jam as well as traffic

accidents.

In conclusion, public transport will be a useful means of travelling for our future world,

so everyone should use public transport more regularly to save money, environment and

reduce traffic jam and the number of people dying due to accident every year.
