Exercise 12: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to choose the word or phrase

that best fits each of the blanks.

When you read something in a foreign language, you often (06)_________ across words you do not

fully understand. Sometimes you check the meaning in a dictionary and sometimes you guess. The

strategy you adopt depends very much (07)_________ the degree of accuracy you require and the time

at your disposal.

If you are the sort of person who tends to turn to the dictionary frequently, it is worth

remembering that every dictionary has its advantages. Each definition is only an approximation and

one builds up an accurate picture of the meaning of a word only after meeting it in a (08)_________ of

contexts. It is also important to recognize the special dangers of dictionaries that translate from

English into your native language and vice versa. If you must use a dictionary, it is usually

(09)_________ safer to consult an English-English dictionary.

In most exams you are not permitted to use a dictionary. (10)_________ you are allowed to use

one, it is very time-consuming to look up words, and time in exams is usually limited. You are,

therefore, forced to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words.

myself I could not help telling my sons about the things. When I suddenly woke up at midnight, I

found my eldest son was sitting (04)________ me. He kissed me and said, "Don't worry, Mum. We love

you very much and always stand by you whatever happens." At the moment I started weeping,

grabbed him and kissed him. His words and love made me forget all about what I was stressing about.

In fact ever since that moment, I have realized that I can overcome any problems thanks to my

sons' love. The most important thing of my life is that my boys are safe and healthy, and they bring

me joy all the time. The memory (05)________ me that nothing really matters, when I have the love of

The word laser was coined as an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission

of Radiation. Ordinary light, from the Sun or a light bulb, is emitted spontaneously, when atoms or

molecules get rid of excess energy by themselves, without any outside intervention. Stimulated

emission is different because it occurs when an atom or molecule holding onto excess energy has

been stimulated to emit it as light. TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

Albert Einstein was the first to suggest the existence of stimulated emission in a paper

published in 1917. However, for many years, physicists thought that atoms and molecules always

were much more likely to emit light spontaneously and that stimulated emission thus always would

be much weaker. It was not until after the Second World War that physicists began trying to make

stimulated emission dominate. They sought ways by which one atom or molecule could stimulate

many other to emit light, amplifying it to much higher powers.

Exercise 17: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to

indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions.

The need for a surgical operation, especially an emergency operation, almost always

comes as a severe shock to the patient and his family. Despite modern advances, most people

still have an irrational fear of hospitals, and anaesthetics. Patients do not often believe they

really need surgery - cutting into a part of the body as opposed to treatment with drugs.

In the early years of the 20th century there was little specialization in surgery. A good

surgeon was capable of performing almost every operation that had been advised up to that

time. Today the situation is different. Operations are now being carried out that were not even

dreamed of fifty years ago. The heart can be safely opened and its valves repaired. Clogged

blood vessels can be cleaned out, and broken ones mended or replaced. A lung, the whole

stomach, or even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient to live comfortable

and satisfactory life. However, not every surgeon wants to, or is qualified to carry out every type

of modern operation.

The scope of surgery has increased remarkably in the past decades. Its safety has

increased too. Deaths from most operations are about 20% of what they were in 1910 and

surgery has been extended in many directions, for example to certain types of birth defects in

new born babies, and, at the other end of the scale, to life saving operations for the octogenarian.

The hospital stay after surgery has been shortened to as little as a week for most major

operations. Most patients are out of bed on the day after an operation and may be back at work

in two or three weeks.

Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible. They include replacement

of damaged blood vessels with simulated ones made of plastic: the replacement of heart valves

with plastic substitutes; the transplanting of tissues such as lens of the eye; the invention of the TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

artificial kidney to clean the blood of poisons at regular intervals and the development of heart

and lung machines to keep patients alive during very long operations. All these things open a

hopeful vista for the future of surgery.

One of the most revolutionary areas of modem surgery is that of organ transplants. Until

a few decades ago, no person, except an identical twin, was able to accept into his body the

tissues of another person without reacting against them and eventually killing them. Recently,

however, it has been discovered that with the use of X-rays and special drugs, it is possible to

graft tissues from one person to another which will survive for periods of a year or more.

Kidneys have been successfully transplanted between non-identical twins. Heart and lung

transplants have also been reasonably successful.

"Spare parts" surgery, the simple routine replacement of all worn-out organs by new

ones, is still a dream of the future but surgery is ready for such miracles. In the meantime, you

can be happy if your doctors say to you, "Yes, I think it is possible to operate on you for this

condition."

Question 36: Most people are afraid of being operated on__________.

Exercise 18: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to

indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Genetic modification of foods is not a new practice. It has been practiced for thousands of

years under the name of "selective breeding". Animals and plants were chosen because they had

traits that humans found useful. Some animals were larger and stronger than others, or they yielded

more food, or they had some other trait that humans valued. Therefore, they were bred because of TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

Designed by Đỗ Bình – binhbac72@gmail.com https://violet.vn/quocbinh72 page 30

those traits. Individuals with those traits were brought together and allowed to breed in the hope

that their offspring would have the same traits in greater measure.

Much the same thing was done with plants. To produce bigger or sweeter fruit, or grow more

grain per unit of land, strains of plants were combined and recombined to produce hybrids, or

crossbreeds that had the desired traits in the right combinations. All the while, however, biologists

wondered: is there a more direct and versatile way to change the traits of plants and animals? Could

we rewrite, so to speak, the heredity of organisms to make them serve our needs better?

In the 20th century, genetic modification made such changes possible at last. Now, it was

possible to alter the genetic code without using the slow and uncertain process of selective breeding.

It even became possible to blend plants and animals genetically: to insert animal genes into plants,

for example, in order to give the plants a certain trait they ordinarily would lack, such as resistance

to freezing. The result was a tremendous potential to change the very nature of biology.

Exercise 19: Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to

indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.

Laws are rules that a society makes to maintain order and keep citizens and their possessions

safe. Most countries have thousands of laws that are enforced by police officers with the help of court

systems.

Laws today are based on those of earlier societies. Ancient Egypt had laws in 3000 B.C. They

were based on common sense views of right and wrong. All people were equal under the law. When

a person broke the law, their punishment could be as simple as returning a stolen item or as severe

as lashings from a whip . S o m e ti m e s , a p e r s o n’s entire family could be punished for their crimes.

Later, there was the Code of Hammurabi from the land of Babylon. It was the first written

code of law in history and was created in 1772 B.C. It included 282 laws in total. This is where we get

th e p h r a s e , “ a n e y e fo r a n e y e ” a s th a t w a s a p u ni s h m e nt. There were laws about rewards for

returning slaves to owners, laws about marriage, laws about compensation for theft and loss, and

laws about responsibility if a house collapsed. These laws were originally written on giant stone

tablets. Some tablets still exist and are kept in the Louvre Museum.

Later, the Romans created their first legal text, the Law of the Twelve Tables, in the mid-5th

century B.C. These laws were mostly civil, meaning they were private laws about how citizens TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

interacted. That meant Romans focused on laws about property and possession. These laws were so

well formed that they have affected lawyers ever since.

Without these ancient examples, our modern laws would be very different. We have many

laws today, and new ones are still being created by governments. Sometimes, governments change

past laws as well. In the early 20th century, the government banned alcohol in the U.S. Later, the

government made alcohol legal and set a drinking age. This is just one example of how laws can be

changed. (Adapted from Subject Link 8 for Reading'' )

In America, when dining, people consider it rude for a guest or dining partner to belch or burp,

eat with an open mouth, smack, or lick your fingers. Napkins, generally provided are available at

every meal and should be placed in one's lap and then used throughout the meal to clean one's fingers

and mouth.

It is acceptable to refuse additional servings of food by saying "No, thank you" and the host or

hostess will not be insulted if you do so. Similarly, if you leave a small amount of uneaten food on

your plate at a restaurant or in a home, it is not considered an insult. If you eat everything on the

plate, a host or hostess may possibly feel that they have not prepared enough food and might be

embarrassed. People in the United States serve and eat food with either hand, but never take food

from a communal serving dish with their hands. Generally, a serving utensil is used.

Americans typically use forks, spoons and knives to eat, but there are some types of foods that

are acceptable to eat with one's fingers, like sandwiches or pizza. When in doubt, look to see what

others are doing. In formal dining situations, if you wonder whether or not it is acceptable to begin

eating, you should wait until the oldest woman (or oldest man if no women are present) begins to

eat. When eating, do not pick up the bowl or plate from the table to hold underneath your mouth.

Even noodles, soup, and rice are eaten and with the plate or bowl remaining on the table. When

consuming soup and hot liquids, it is considered impolite to slurp - do not do this. When consuming

noodles, twirl them around your fork and then put it in your mouth.

If you are a man taking out a woman for dinner, you are almost always expected to pay. This is

for the woman to gauge your intentions and interest with her. For example, taking a woman for coffee,

tacos, versus a fancy dinner, versus for drinks at 11:30pm, all signal many different things to them. So,

the date is a "test" of many. Paying is just as important as where you take her, and how late. So, don't

assume she is just trying to get a "free meal". Most girls aren't. Also, if you are going out with a friend to

eat, almost always, the bill is expected to be split in half, or each person pays for themselves.

If you are eating in a restaurant, you will be expected to add a 15 to 20 % tip for the server to

your bill. In America, wait staff might occasionally stop by your table to ask how your meal is, which

is considered good service. They will also bring you your check when it seems reasonable that you

are finished with your meal, however this is not necessarily an indication that you must leave right

away (Do not be too embarrassed to ask for the check either. waiters and waitresses cannot read

minds.) Take your time to finish your meal, and unless there is a line of people waiting at the door, it

is not considered rude to linger at your table for as long as you like.

correct answer to each of the questions.

THE ART WORLD

One of the major problems in the art world is how to distinguish and promote an artist. In

effect, a market must be created for an artist to be successful. The practice of signing and numbering

individual prints was introduced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the nineteenth century artist best

known for the painting of his mother, called "Arrangement in Grey and Black", but known to most of

u s a s " Wh is tl e r ’s M o th e r " . Wh is tl e r ’s b r o th e r -in-law, Sir Francis Seymour Haden, a less well-known

artist, had speculated that collectors might find prints more attractive if they knew that there were

only a limited number of copies produced. By signing the work in pencil, an artist could guarantee

and personalize each print.

As soon as Whistler and Haden began the practice of signing and numbering their prints, their

work began to increase in value. When other artists noticed that the signed prints commanded higher

prices, they began copying the procedure.

Although most prints are signed on the right-hand side in the margin below the image, the

placement of the signature is a matter of personal choice. Indeed, prints have been signed within

image, in any of the margins, or even on the reverse side of the print. Wherever the artist elects to

sign it, a signed print is still valued above an unsigned one, even in the same edition.

Scientists know that there were wolves on Earth about one million years ago. Dogs, on the

other hand, have not been on Earth nearly as long. The oldest dog remains, found in Germany, are

about 14,000 years old. Scientists have proven that dogs are descended from wolves. Though wolves

and dogs share some of the same genes, they are not exactly alike. In fact, there are as many

differences as there are similarities between the two. TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

Designed by Đỗ Bình – binhbac72@gmail.com https://violet.vn/quocbinh72 page 38

First, there are physical differences between the two. Wolves have longer legs, larger feet, and

a broader skull than dogs. They also walk differently from dogs. A wolf runs on its toes with its heels

raised up from the ground. This is more similar to a cat's walk than a dog's.

Second, there are mental differences between the two. Dogs have been domesticated. This

means that dogs have been brought under the control of humans in order to provide companionship.

Wolves have not been domesticated. They are wild animals. Having a dog as a pet is like having a

juvenile wolf. A young wolf will turn into a mature adult, while a young dog does not mature. A dog

might seem smart by performing tricks for people. Wolves need to be smart to survive in the wild.

While it may not be impossible to have a wolf as a pet, scientists are of the opinion that a wolf could

never be domesticated in the same way as a dog.

It's important to keep in mind that the differences between the two are great, and each should

be appreciated in its own habitat or home.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the

correct answer to each of the questions.

Employees in many countries change jobs more often than previous generations of workers.

They don't expect to find a job with a company that will take care of them for the rest of their lives.

But what is the cause of this trend? Is it a new economy, new ways of doing business, or the

employees themselves?

A more globalized economy has had an effect on employment. A large number of companies are

now international, and one of them may decide that moving from its offices from Germany to Poland,

for example, is in its best interest. That means employees who live and work in Germany may be asked

to relocate their families to a new country or be told that their jobs are simply eliminated.

Companies have also responded to economic pressure by restructuring for greater efficiency.

This sort of change within a company usually means that unnecessary jobs are cut, or that fewer

employees must do more work. In their case, some employees find themselves looking for new jobs.

New technology has also had an impact on workplaces. The increasing use of personal

computers has meant fewer jobs for office secretaries, as their former bosses do their own words

processing and letter writing, and for travel agents, as more travelers make their own reservations

online. Automation, including the use of robotic devices, has replaced workers in clothing factories,

post offices, and telephone companies, to name just a few.

Besides these economic and technological reasons, today's employees are also responsible

for more frequent job changes. Workers in the past were less likely to leave a company because they

were dissatisfied with working conditions or because they didn't get along well with their fellow TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

employees. People today expect to enjoy their work and have personal satisfaction from what they

do for a living.

Employees may also leave a job because they have learned all they can learn from their

current job. Getting a new job means gaining new skills and making new contracts, and these skills

and relationships could bring them a step clos e r to t h e ir “ d r e a m j o b ” , th e o ne th a t is c h a l l e n g in g , emotionally and financially rewarding, and preferably closer to home or their children's school.

Finally, companies start up and close down more quickly than they once did. Employees who

suspect that their employer is not doing well may decide to start looking for a new position before

the company closes its doors.

Belgium is a very old country, with a fascinating mixture of old customs and modern laws. Belgium

weddings may be performed as a civil ceremony or as a religious ceremony. TIPS ON HOW TO DO GOOD-ENGLISH PAPER IN GCSE EXAMINATION - A GUIDE FOR SUCCESS

Traditionally, when a couple in Belgium wishes to announce their marriage, the wedding invitations

are printed on two sheets of paper, one from the bride's family and one sheet from the groom's family. These

wedding invitations symbolize the union of the two families and the partnership of the new union.

An ancient Belgium custom that is designed to unite the two families calls for the bride to stop as

she walks up the aisle and to hand her mother a single flower. The two then embrace. Then, during the

recessional, the bride and groom walk to the groom's mother and the new bride hands her new mother-in-

law a single flower and the two of them embrace, symbolizing the bride's acceptance of her new mother.

One of the most important and enduring traditions of the Belgium wedding is for the bride to

carry a specially embroidered handkerchief that has her name embroidered on it. After the wedding this

handkerchief is framed and hung on the wall in a place of honor. When the next female member of the

bride's family is to be wed, the handkerchief is removed from its frame, the new bride's name is

embroidered onto it, and it is passed down. The wedding handkerchief is passed from generation to

generation, and is considered an important family heirloom.

During the wedding mass, the bride and the groom are enthroned in two large chairs placed near

the altar, symbolizing that on this day and in this place they are the king and the queen. At the conclusion

of the ceremony, the groom slips the wedding ring onto the third finger of his bride's left hand. The ring,

being an endless circle, symbolizes never-ending love, and the third finger of the left hand is believed to

hold the vein that travels to the heart, symbolizing love. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the bride and

groom share their first kiss as husband and wife. The kiss is considered a symbolic act of sharing each

other's spirit as the couple each breathes in a portion of their new mate's soul.

The bridesmaids traditionally take up a collection of coins and as the bride and groom exit the

church, the bridesmaids toss the coins to the poor outside the church. Giving gifts of money to the poor

helps to insure prosperity for the new bride and groom, etc.

Following the wedding the bride and groom are off on their honeymoon. In ancient times the

honeymoon, which was celebrated by the drinking of mead, or honey wine, would last 28 days, one

complete cycle of the moon. This was to make sure that the bride's family did not try to steal their

daughter back from her new husband. (Adapted from http://www.best-country.com)

One way of training for your future occupation in Germany is by pursuing a dual vocational training

program. Such programs offer plenty of opportunity for on-the-job training and work experience. Programs

usually last between two and three and a half years and comprise theoretical as well as practical elements.

You will spend one or two days a week, or several weeks at once, at a vocational school where you will acquire

the theoretical knowledge that you will need in your future occupation. The rest of the time will be spent at a

company. There you get to apply your newly acquired knowledge in practice, for example by learning to

operate machinery. You will get to know what your company does, learn how it operates and find out if you

can see yourself working there after completing your training.

This combination of theory and practice gives you a real head start into your job. By the time you

have completed your training, you will not only have the required technical knowledge, but you will also

have hands-on experience in your job. There are around 350 officially recognised training programs in

Germany, so chances are good that one of them will suit your interests and talents. You can find out which

one that might be by visiting one of the jobs and vocational training fairs which are organised in many

German cities at different times in the year.

Employment prospects for students who have completed a dual vocational training program are

very good. This is one of the reasons why this kind of training is very popular with young Germans around

two thirds of all students leaving school go on to start a vocational training program.

Successful students often do the followings while studying. First, they have an overview

before reading. Next, they look for important information and pay greater attention to it (which often

needs jumping forward or backward to process information). They also relate important points to

one another. Also, they activate and use their prior knowledge. When they realize that their

understanding is not good, they do not wait to change strategies. Last, they can monitor

understanding a nd ta k e a ctio n t o co r r e ct o r “ fix u p ” m is ta k e s in co m p r e h e ns io n.

Conversely, students with low academic achievement often demonstrate ineffective study

skills. They tend to assume a passive role, in learning and rely on others (e.g., teachers, parents) to

monitor their studying, for example, low-achieving students often do not monitor their

understanding of content; they may not be aware of the purpose of studying; and they show little

e v id e nce o f l o o k in g b a ck , o r e m p l o y in g “ fix - u p ” s tr a te g ie s to fix u n d e r s tanding problems. Students

who struggle with learning new information seem to be unaware that they must extent effort beyond

simply reading the content to understand and remember it. Children with learning disabilities do not

plan and judge the quality of their studying. Their studying may be disorganized. Students with

learning problems face challenges with personal organization as well. They often have difficulty

keeping track of materials and assignments, following directions, and completing work on time.

Unlike good studiers who employ a variety of study skills in a flexible yet purposeful manner, low-

achieving students use a restricted range of study skills. They cannot explain why good study

strategies are important for learning; and they tend to use the same, often ineffective study approach

for all learning tasks, ignoring task content, structure or difficulty.

Pollution emitted in industrial areas represents a threat to human health and the surrounding

natural resources. We have a tendency to believe that the production processes are the only source

of environmental damage, and often forget about the possible long-term effects of harmful

production practices. We may think that the closure of these huge industrial areas would improve

the quality of the environment. Unfortunately, this ignores the threat of the remaining waste, which

is abandoned and poorly stored. It represents an even bigger danger because it stands neglected as

it degrades and leaks into the earth without any control at all.

Changes in the water chemistry due to surface water contamination can affect all levels of an

ecosystem. It can affect the health of lower food chain organisms and, consequently, the availability of

food up through the food chain. It can damage the health of wetlands and damage their ability to support

healthy ecosystems, control flooding, and filter pollutants from storm water runoff. The health of animals

and humans are affected when they drink or bathe in contaminated water. In addition water-based

organisms, like fish and shellfish, can pile up and concentrate contaminants in their bodies. When other

animals or humans eat these organisms, they receive a much higher dose of contaminant than they would

have if they had been directly exposed to the original contamination.

Contaminated groundwater can badly affect animals, plants and humans if it is removed from

the ground by manmade or natural processes. Depending on the study of rocks of the area,

groundwater may rise to the surface through springs or seeps, flow sideways into nearby rivers,

streams, or ponds, or sink deeper into the earth. In many parts of the world, groundwater is pumped

out of the ground to be used for drinking, bathing, other household uses, agriculture, and industry.

Contaminants in the soil can harm plants when they take up the contamination through their roots.

Eating, breathing in, or touching contaminated soil, as well as eating plants or animals that have piled

up soil contaminants can badly affect the health of humans and animals.

Air pollution can cause breathing-related problems and other bad health effects as

contaminants are absorbed from the lungs into other parts of the body. Certain air contaminants can

also harm animals and humans when they contact the skin. Plants rely on breathing for their growth

and can also be affected by exposure to contaminants moved in the air.

In the American colonies there was little money. England did not supply the colonies with

coins and did not allow the colonies to make their own coins, except for the Massachusetts Bay

Colony, which received permission for a short period in 1652 to make several kinds of silver coins.

England wanted to keep money out of America as a means of controlling trade: America was forced

to trade only with England if it did not have the money to buy products from other countries. The

result during this pre-revolutionary period was that the colonists used various goods in place of

money: beaver pelts, Indian wampum, and tobacco leaves were all commonly used substitutes for

money. The colonists also made use of any foreign coins they could obtain. Dutch, Spanish, French,

and English coins were all in use in the American colonies.

During the Revolutionary War, funds were needed to finance the world, so each of the

individual states and the Continental Congress issued paper money. So much of this paper money

was printed that by the end of the war, almost no one would accept it. As a result, trade in goods and

the use of foreign coins still flourished during this period.

By the time the Revolutionary War had been won by the American colonists, the monetary

system was in a state of total disarray. To remedy this situation, the new Constitution of the United

States, approved in 1789, allowed Congress to issue money. The individual states could no longer

have their own money supply. A few years later, the Coinage Act of 1792 made the dollar the official

currency of the United States and put the country on a bimetallic standard. In this bimetallic system,

correct answer to each of the questions.

Just two months after the flight of Apollo 10, the Apollo 11 astronauts made their historic

landing on the surface of the Moon. This momentous trip for humanity also provided scientists with

an abundance of material for study; from rock and soil samples brought back from the Moon,

scientists have been able to determine much about the composition of the Moon (as well as to draw)

inferences about the development of the Moon from its composition.

The Moon soil that came back on Apollo 11 contains small bits of rock and glass which were

probably ground from larger rocks when meteors impacted with the surface of the Moon. The bits of

glass are spherical in shape and constitute approximately half of the Moon soil. Scientists found no

trace of animal or plant life in this soil.

In addition to the Moon soil, astronauts gathered two basic types of rocks from the surface of

the Moon: Basalt and breccia. Basalt is a cooled and hardened volcanic lava common to the Earth. Since

basalt is formed under extremely high temperatures, the presence of this type of rock is an indication

that the temperature of the Moon was once extremely hot. Breccia, the other kind of rock brought back

by the astronauts, was formed during the impact of falling objects on the surface of the

Moon. It consists of small pieces of rock compressed together by the force of impact. Gases such as

hydrogen and helium were found in some of the rocks, and scientists believe that these gases were

carried to the Moon by the solar wind, the streams of gases that are constantly emitted by the Sun.
